Polaris

 Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
Oh no! it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken
.
--- from Sonnet CXVI; William Shakespeare

Polaris )

I turned to face her, my face registering a strange look as if she had gone insane. "What are you babbling about? What's about the North Star?"

She snapped out of her deep thought and blushed. "Oh, sorry. I was just thinking out loud."

"So what is this...er...star thing?"

"You're hopeless." She shook her head pityingly. "I'm talking about the North Star...more popularly known as the Polaris."

"Okay." Raising an eyebrow, I motioned for her to continue.

"It's a star."

I snorted. "I know that. It wouldn't be called the North Star if it wasn't."

"Well, you're not interested in this astronomy stuff anyway. You're a...mystery books sort of girl." She shrugged and continued walking on ahead of me.

I sighed impatiently and briskly followed her.

It was not my fault that we don't share the same interests. She was the imaginative type - prone to liking the supernatural, fairytales, magic, other worlds...and astronomy. Although the latter was a science, she was fascinated with the stars and the sky, and sometimes would attach different stories and legends to those twinkling lights. She still believes in angels, fairies and all that trash. I bet if Captain Hook kidnaps her as ransom for Peter Pan, she won't make the slightest objection. A bit childish for a teenager like her.

On the other hand, I lean more on the practical side. I must admit, I never had what she has - an imagination so infinite as the universe she was passionate about. I love fiction as well, but I prefer reading Agatha Christie or even Jane Austen than indulge in anything fanciful. Watching detective shows on television make me satiated.

I wouldn't know what a phoenix is from a peacock, because they're both birds to me. She wouldn't go and find out why the school's basement is locked for fear of vengeful ghosts. Simple as that.

If our interests were contradictory, it's the same case as with our personalities. She's romantic, I'm a cynic. She's warm, compassionate, and generous - I'm cold, insensitive and selfish. She's affectionate and amiable, I loathe emotion and human contact.

Still, we're friends. Best friends at that.

Maybe the saying "opposites attract" holds true., at least for the both of us.

"Hey!" I ran towards her, stopping at her side. "You never continued about that...uh..."

"North Star." She replied monotonously.

"Oh, come on." I gave her a lopsided grin, my trademark for asking forgiveness. I tend to tease her rather cruelly, but I would often end up guilty for doing so. "Tell me more."

Her bright eyes had a suspicious glare, then she relented. "All right." Her round, pixie-like face now held excitement. "The North Star, or more popularly known as Polaris, is a star located in the constellation Ursa Minor. It's always located in the North, so when sailors didn't have compasses with them, they would often use the Polaris as a guide."

"Always located in the North?" I asked in disbelief. Stars, like planets, move...at least that's what I know.

She nodded eagerly. "Always."

"It never moves?"

She shook her head firmly. "Never. And so, if you're lost, just look for the Polaris. You'll always find your way."
