"You look like hell."

Of all the people to see me, it had to be him.

He had that sickeningly amused grin on his face, something that was completely alien and yet familiar. What I mean to say is that he never smiles. But if he smiles to insult someone, then I know he's acting normal.

I glared at him. "What are you doing here?"

He snickered softly. "I think the question is, what were you doing? You look like as if you played with your piggy friends again, Tulip Head."

What an arrogant, insensitive jerk. If I can do it, I would cheerfully make murder legal.

I stuck my tongue out at him. It was childish, but there was no other way I could think of to retaliate. "Who are you calling a 'pig' and a 'tulip head'? And for your information, what I did was none of your business. Now go away before I drag you out of this mansion."

"Touché, Tulip Head." He clapped mockingly. "Why don't you go to the bathroom now? Oh wait...you might clog up the drains with that mud makeup of yours. Or is it some sort of trendy style?"

My fist met his face in reply.

Silence.

I thought I'd gone too far, and I blushed.

He just rubbed his swollen cheek. "Ow."

"I'm sorry---"

"Don't be." He cut me off coldly. "I'm used to it."

"Then why didn't you avoid it? Hayate, you're a Knight, for heaven's sake!"

He raised an eyebrow, his blue eyes glittering with strange humor. "You're weird, Tulip Head."

"You're even weirder, Hayate." I retorted. "Why are you like this? You're always making me want to kill you all the time. And..." I paused, exhaling sharply. "You're always saying things that hurt me."

A snort escaped his lips.

"I want us to be friends."

He still didn't say anything.

I sighed. "Is that too hard to understand? I know...that for some reason, you don't like me. And I know that you don't want me to be the Pretear. But..." I shrugged helplessly. "I'm already the Pretear. Can't we just move on and get along, at least even for a little bit?"

"Maybe. Maybe not."

I felt my anger started to rise again. It wasn't exactly anger...it was frustration.

"What do you mean 'maybe, maybe not'? Hayate, you're so confusing!"

He only shrugged in reply.

"Fine." I fumed, and started to walk up the stairs, my back to him. "If that's how it's going to be, then be my guest. I'm going to my room and---"

His hand grasped my wrist and whirled me around roughly, facing him. My cheeks were tainted with crimson as his other hand gently rubbed the mud off my nose.

"H-Hayate? What are you..."

His hold slackened and he smiled strangely. "Next time, you should be careful, Tulip Head. I'm not going to clean your face again."
